The idea of an all-black and white farmhouse may seem odd to some, but there are actually many benefits to making this choice of color scheme. Black and white lend themselves well to creating variety in décor, especially when you mix in other colors like gray and blue. It also doesn’t matter if you live in the country or the suburbs; black and white can work in both areas! If you’re designing your own black and white farmhouse, there are certain rules you need to follow to get it right. Read on to find out how.
The Exterior: Black Doors, Trim, and Shutters with White Brick and Siding
Having black and white on the exterior of your house can add a touch of sophistication to any home. One of the most prominent features on a black and white farmhouse is the black front door. I would recommend choosing a dark, glossy paint for the door, trim and shutters as this will be more durable and stand up to weather better than a light-colored paint would. Using a combination of white brick or siding with black doors, trim and shutters is best because it creates contrast while still keeping with the theme.
The trim around windows could be painted white to match the window frames or be painted black to stand out and make a statement. Shutters are also another popular element on black and white homes; these could be anything from simple plantation style shutters all the way up to huge louvered boards that cover a large portion of the house.
The Interior: White Shiplap, Tile, and Walls
The beauty of using white as your canvas is that it gives you the flexibility to use color elsewhere without clashing. By doing this, you can create a classic look without compromising on style. A good way to get started is by adding some colorful pillows and art for pops of color. Don’t forget about wallpaper! If you’re feeling really adventurous, why not hang wallpaper over one wall? It will give your space an instant upgrade without having to paint anything!
The Kitchen: Black Cabinets, White Cabinets, and Countertops
The kitchen is a great place to start designing a black and white farmhouse. We love white cabinets with black handles because they really pop against the dark countertops. You can use white or black paint for cabinets. Maybe even do a black island if you don’t want to go all out on black cabinets! Don’t forget about the walls – we frequently see a light gray color that ties into the granite beautifully. You can use black faucets and hardware or mix it up with brass or gold finishes.
The Living Room: Black Furniture with White Accents
Use a light colored rug with black, white, or grey furniture and colored accents. Incorporate black and white into the design scheme by adding accent pieces, artwork and accessories. A mix of formal and casual pieces is always a good idea. You can also add pops of color with colorful throw pillows or flowers to brighten up the space.
The Bedroom: White Bedding with Black Accents
The bedroom is the most intimate space of the house, so it’s important to have it reflect your personal tastes. One way to do this is with decor that draws inspiration from the city or town you live in. In my case, I chose black bedding with white accents for a Waco feel that will remind me of home every day! Use some texture on at least one of the walls with wallpaper, shiplap or at minimum, some beautiful curtains.
The Bathroom: Black Fixtures with White Tile
Contrast can be a great design technique, but what if you want to go all white or all black? Fixtures are an easy place to start. Picking the right fixture color can make your bathroom feel like it has been customized just for you. Here’s how to pick the right colors for your bathroom with examples of fixtures that work well with either black or white tile.
